Ali Bastian reveals stage 2 breast cancer battle and vows to fight it

Ali Bastian, the 42-year-old former Hollyoaks star, has recently revealed her stage 2 breast cancer diagnosis. The actress, who moved from London to West Cork, Ireland, with her family earlier this year, discovered the lump while breastfeeding her 19-month-old daughter, Isabella.

Unexpected Discovery and Diagnosis

Initially, Bastian thought the lump was mastitis or a blocked milk duct. However, when antibiotics failed to resolve the issue, she sought further medical advice. A biopsy confirmed the presence of cancerous cells in the last week of June. “It was a total shock,” Bastian exclusively told OK Magazine. “I have mornings when I wake up and I’ve forgotten… and then suddenly I remember. I’m still trying to process it.”

Treatment Plan and Family History

Bastian is currently undergoing weekly chemotherapy treatments, which are expected to last for about five months. Following this, she will have a mastectomy and radiotherapy. Her medical team has expressed their “intent to cure,” words that Bastian is holding onto throughout her treatment.

Tests have shown that Bastian’s cancer is hormone-driven, with the possibility of it being genetic. Both her maternal aunt and grandmother had breast cancer, prompting discussions about preventative measures. Bastian has enquired about the possibility of a double mastectomy, though this option hasn’t been fully explored yet.

Support from Husband and Coping Strategies

Bastian’s husband, David O’Mahony, has been a constant source of support throughout this challenging time. He was present when she received the diagnosis and has been helping her prepare for the physical changes associated with treatment. O’Mahony assisted Bastian in cutting her hair shorter, and she now wears wigs to manage hair loss.

To maintain her appearance during treatment, Bastian has taken proactive steps such as having her eyebrows tattooed and receiving semi-permanent makeup. These measures help her feel more like herself as she navigates the physical and emotional challenges of her diagnosis.

Professional and Personal Support Network

The actress has received an outpouring of support from her former Hollyoaks co-stars, including Sarah Jayne Dunn, Carley Stenson, and Jodi Albert. Bastian mentioned that Albert was “one of the first people [she] called,” highlighting the deep connection they share.

In addition to the support from her colleagues, Bastian is receiving psychological support from a specialist in oncology and has been connected with a peer support mentor who has previously experienced breast cancer. These resources are helping her cope with the emotional aspects of her diagnosis and treatment.

Despite the challenges ahead, Bastian remains optimistic about her future. “I will get through this and come out the other side,” she stated. The actress is focusing on her treatment and recovery, taking each day as it comes.
