Today, September 10, 2024, marked a significant event at Tuensang Village Church as it hosted a Suicide Prevention Awareness Programme to observe Suicide Prevention Day. This annual observance aims to raise awareness and foster discussions around mental health and suicide prevention.
Over 80 youth attended the programme, which was themed “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with the call to action “Start the Conversation” for the years 2024-26. Yangkhumla, a Clinical Psychologist from the District Hospital Tuensang, was the key speaker. She emphasized the crucial role mental health plays in preventing suicide and other mental illnesses.
Yangkhumla highlighted that suicide is a leading cause of death and noted the increasing prevalence of mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression in Nagaland. She stressed the importance of changing the narrative surrounding suicide, particularly among young people, to address this complex issue effectively.

The Clinical Psychologist encouraged open and honest discussions about mental health and suicide within communities. She emphasized that starting these conversations can help break down barriers and raise awareness. Yangkhumla also underscored the need to shift away from a culture of silence and stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide.
Yangkhumla advised sharing concerns with friends, family, or seeking help from counsellors, no matter how small the issue may seem. This approach, she believes, can foster a more supportive and understanding society where everyone feels valued, and suicide can be prevented.
