The Office of the Sangtam Students’ Union Dimapur (SSUD) has addressed the Nagaland Government and relevant authorities regarding the deplorable condition of roads in and around Dimapur. The union highlighted that the poor state of the roads is indirectly affecting the mental health of commuters, particularly students.
In a press release, SSUD emphasized that good roads are a basic necessity for citizens but expressed regret over the State Government’s “nugatory attitude” in delivering this need. The union noted that travelling on rough, uneven, and badly rutted roads complicates social and professional lives in Dimapur.
SSUD urged the Nagaland Government to utilize funds collected from indirect taxes such as fuel, car sales, and parking fees to repair and maintain roads, drains, and footpaths. The union stressed the importance of creating a clean, safe, and progressive environment in Dimapur.
To underscore the benefits of well-maintained roads, SSUD referenced an analysis by IIT Roorkee and CSIR-Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi. The analysis showed that proper road maintenance could save 0.128 million litres of fuel per 1000 vehicle-kilometres over 15 years. Additionally, research scholar Bhavesh Jain at IIT Roorkee stated that better road conditions on a 5km stretch can save up to 640 litres of fuel per vehicle over 15 years.
