The NSCN (R) has terminated the services of all cadres involved in the alleged assault of a person in Zunheboto on August 12. This decision follows an inquiry committee’s report, which was set up on August 3 to investigate the incident. The committee found that the incident stemmed from an earlier event on July 31, where NSCN (R) cadres intercepted an alcohol-laden van but allowed it to proceed at the request of Lieutenant Colonel Akum Sangtam. On August 2, the commander allegedly misbehaved towards the cadres while they were shopping, leading to a confrontation. The victim, Dick, who is also a co-brother of Lt Col Akum and involved in illegal liquor sales, was assaulted by the cadres. The NSCN (R) condemned the act as “inhuman and barbaric” and expressed regret to Dick and his family, offering to cover his medical expenses.
