NDPP urges reconsideration of cow slaughter ban programme in Kohima

NDPP

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has called on the organisers of the ‘Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra’ to reconsider their plans to hold a programme in Kohima, Nagaland, on September 28, 2024. The event aims to promote a ban on cow slaughter, a move that could disrupt the socio-religious harmony in the state.

Protecting State Sentiments

The NDPP, as a regional political party representing the people of Nagaland, prioritises protecting the rights, privileges, and sentiments of its citizens. The party reminded that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) and the Government of Nagaland had decided not to implement the “Ban on Cow Slaughter Act 2019” due to constitutional provisions under Article 371A. This decision reflects the state’s commitment to maintaining its unique cultural and religious practices.

Potential Impact on Harmony

Organising such an event could hurt the sentiments of the Naga people and undermine the prevailing socio-religious harmony in the state. The NDPP emphasised that while it respects the social and religious beliefs of all citizens, it expects similar respect for the practices of the Naga people. The freedom granted to states by the Constitution allows them to enact laws based on their specific needs, which is why many North-Eastern states, along with Kerala and West Bengal, have chosen not to implement the 2019 Act.

Government Intervention Requested

The NDPP has appealed to the Nagaland Government to intervene promptly to ensure that the harmony and brotherhood in the state are not disturbed. The party believes that such intervention is crucial to maintaining peace and stability, given the sensitive nature of the issue.

Respecting State Autonomy

In a broader context, the NDPP highlighted that the Republic of India’s constitutional framework allows states significant autonomy in legislative matters. This autonomy is essential for states to address their unique challenges and needs. By organising a programme that promotes a ban on cow slaughter, the organisers would be undermining the powers conferred upon the state legislature and government by the Constitution.
