The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for renaming the Junior Girls’ National Championship in honor of the legendary Dr. Talimeren Ao. This poignant tribute acknowledges Dr. Ao’s pivotal role as the Captain of the Indian football team and the flag bearer at the 1948 London Olympic Games.
Dr. T. Ao, affectionately known as the “Barefoot Warrior,” has left an indelible mark on Indian football. His remarkable journey and achievements have inspired countless generations of footballers. The AIFF, under President Kalyan Chaubey’s leadership, has taken a significant step in ensuring that Dr. Ao’s legacy continues to motivate young athletes across India.

The NDPP also praised the Government of Nagaland, led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, and the Nagaland Football Association (NFA), led by President Neibu Sekhose, for their tireless efforts in honoring Dr. Ao. The state government has instituted several initiatives, including the prestigious “Dr. T. Ao State Sports Award,” which is Nagaland’s highest sports honor. Additionally, the foundation for the Dr. T. Ao Football Academy has been laid, and the premier inter-district football tournament is now named the Dr. T. Ao Inter-District Football Trophy.
Nagaland’s government has also launched the annual Dr. T. Ao North East Football Championships, a celebration that brings together football enthusiasts from across the region. To commemorate Dr. Ao’s 100th birth anniversary, a year-long program was organized, culminating in the Dr. T. Ao Memorial Lecture at the Raj Bhawan in Kohima, delivered by football legend Bhaichung Bhutia. A coffee table book and a documentary chronicling Dr. Ao’s life and achievements have also been published.
