Mount Tiyi College, Wokha, recently hosted an international webinar that delved into the influence of popular Korean culture on the youth of Nagaland. The event, titled “Influence of Popular Korean Culture among Youths in Nagaland: Challenges and Opportunities,” was organised by the college’s Research Committee and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).
The webinar featured Dr. Bongli Sangtam, a distinguished Research Scientist and Guest Faculty from Soon Chun Hyang University, South Korea. Dr. Sangtam provided an in-depth analysis of various aspects of Korean culture and its practices, beginning with South Korea’s remarkable transformation from poverty to prosperity. He emphasised the nation’s strong work ethics, public etiquette, and social environment as key factors contributing to its rapid development, suggesting that these elements could serve as valuable lessons for the youth of Nagaland.

Dr. Sangtam also focused on South Korea’s sustainable environmental policies and the promotion of indigenous technology. He explained how these practices have helped the nation achieve significant progress in environmental conservation and technological innovation. Additionally, he shed light on social media trends, particularly the realities faced by K-pop idols, offering a glimpse into the lives of these popular figures.
Educational opportunities in South Korea were another major topic of discussion. Dr. Sangtam highlighted leading universities in South Korea and the various scholarships available for international students. He stressed the importance of proficiency in the Korean language for those aspiring to study in South Korea and recommended top websites and apps for learning the language, providing valuable information for students considering further education abroad.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Sangtam suggested that the youth of Nagaland could benefit from adopting several Korean practices and attitudes. He emphasised the values of self-reliance, fostering growth, and maintaining a strong community spirit as essential elements that could be integrated into the local context, potentially helping the youth of Nagaland achieve personal and communal development.
The webinar also featured an engaging Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to interact with Dr. Sangtam and gain a deeper understanding of the topics discussed. The event was chaired by Dr. Pichano Kikon, while the welcome speech and keynote address were delivered by Dr. Bweyhunle Khing, Principal of Mount Tiyi College, and Dr. I. Koktiba Sangtam, Convenor of the Research Committee, respectively.
