On September 24, 2024, the town of Mon witnessed a significant milestone in the fight against tobacco with the launch of the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0 at Holy Cross School. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, and led by Deputy Commissioner Mon, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, aims to protect the younger generation from the dangers of tobacco.
The campaign, organized by the District Tobacco Control Cell, Mon, is specifically tailored to target the youth, who are often the most vulnerable to tobacco use. Deputy Commissioner Verma emphasized the pivotal role teachers play in shaping healthy behaviors among students. He urged students to make informed decisions that will shape their future and encouraged them to contribute positively to society.
Dr. Esther Chophy, District Nodal Officer for the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) in Mon, detailed the objectives of the campaign. The welcome address was delivered by Sabu James, Headmaster of Holy Cross School, Mon. The pledge for the campaign was led by Dr. Lihngam Konyak, Junior Dental Surgeon at the District Hospital, Mon. E. Nyeamying Konyak, Consultant for NTCP Mon, chaired the programme.
