Flu-like illness in Nagaland's Dan village sparks concern

A mysterious illness with flu-like symptoms has hit Dan village in Nagaland’s Noklak district, causing widespread concern among residents. The symptoms include cough, fever, and nausea, affecting both young and old.

The Dan Village Council quickly sought medical assistance after noticing the alarming rise in cases. The 14th Assam Rifles responded promptly by organizing a three-day Emergency Medical Camp from August 23 to 25, 2024. Two nurses from District Hospital Noklak assisted in providing medical help during this critical period.

The efforts paid off as cases have since reduced significantly. A total of 271 people were treated for the illness, while 17 patients were placed under observation for close monitoring. Samples collected from 49 patients have been sent to Kohima and further to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, Maharashtra, for analysis. The results are eagerly awaited.

The Primary Health Centre in Dan village is insufficiently staffed with only one nurse, making it ill-equipped to handle such an outbreak. Locals usually travel to Pangsha for medical needs, highlighting the need for better healthcare infrastructure in remote areas.
