The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) has taken a principled stance by deciding to abstain from the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Nagaland as per Morung Express.
In a letter addressed to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the ENPO explained their decision, citing the failure of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to follow through on the creation of the Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT), which was offered as a solution to their long-standing demands.

The ENPO, representing six tribes in eastern Nagaland, has been advocating for a separate state called “Frontier Nagaland” since 2010. The region has been plagued by underdevelopment, lack of basic amenities, and historical neglect, prompting the organization to seek a resolution to their grievances within the framework of democratic governance.
On December 7, 2023, the MHA offered to create the FNT, raising hopes for a potential breakthrough. However, the ENPO claims that the ministry has failed to deliver on its assurance, leading to a reaffirmation of the “Chenmoho Resolution” on March 19, 2024. This resolution, which reflects the sentiments and aspirations of the Eastern Nagaland people, states that they will not participate in any central or state elections until the FNT issue is settled.
The ENPO emphasizes that their decision to abstain from the polls is not an act of defiance against the electoral process or democratic principles. Instead, it is a means to draw attention to the legitimate concerns and aspirations of the people they represent. The organization has requested the ECI to make necessary arrangements to accommodate their abstention from the Lok Sabha elections.
The decision has been met with mixed reactions from various quarters. Some view it as a strong message to the central government, highlighting the need for a more proactive approach in addressing the demands of the Eastern Nagaland people. Others, however, question the effectiveness of this strategy in achieving their goals, arguing that engaging in the democratic process may be a more constructive path forward.
