A distribution camp for persons with disabilities was recently organised in Kohima, Nagaland. The camp, held at the Municipal Council Office Complex, provided much-needed assistive aids and devices to individuals facing unique challenges. The event was a collaborative effort by the District Level Committee on Disability and the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO).
Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant, emphasised the importance of accessibility in achieving true equality. He acknowledged that while the camp may be a small step, it represents a crucial move towards building a society that caters to the needs of all its members. Ramnikant called upon the community to be more aware of the difficulties faced by persons with disabilities and to actively work towards creating an environment that is accessible to all.

Diethono Nakhro, the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, highlighted the significance of the assessment and distribution camp in supporting Kohima’s disability sector. She pointed out that families with disabled members often face unique and high costs, requiring extra assistance to ensure their full participation in society. Nakhro noted that while awareness about living with disabilities has increased, there is still a long way to go in creating a truly inclusive community.
Accessible schools, classrooms, and playgrounds are essential for disabled children to socialise and engage fully in community life, Nakhro stressed. She also drew attention to the high costs of assistive aids and devices, which often lead to exclusion and isolation for persons with disabilities. These devices, she emphasised, are not mere tools but enablers of talents, passions, and potential.

The programme, chaired by Moasunep K. Jingru, EAC (Development), began with an invocation by Vikengungu Fatima Kera, President of the Nagaland State Disabilities Forum. The event concluded with Ashe Kiba expressing gratitude on behalf of the disabled community to the ADIP team and all those who contributed to the camp’s success.
The distribution camp was a powerful example of collaboration, with various segments of society, including the church, public organisations, and women’s groups, coming together to support persons with disabilities. Nakhro called for sustained efforts to make the community more accessible and inclusive, ensuring that persons with disabilities can lead fulfilling and active lives.
