On September 24, 2024, the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) in Dimapur kicked off the ‘60-days Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign 2.0’, a bold initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The launch event, held at the DC Conference Hall in Dimapur, marked a significant step towards a healthier future for the region’s youth.
Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, officially inaugurated the campaign by unveiling new sets of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials. The event was well-attended by members of the District Level Coordination Committee and representatives from various schools, all united in their commitment to a tobacco-free environment.
A highlight of the event was the felicitation of five schools that have successfully adhered to the Tobacco-free Educational Institution (ToFEI) guidelines of NTCP. Government Middle School Phaipijang, Government High School Sarbura, Government Primary School Kirha, Neingulie Memorial High School, and Christian Mission School were each awarded the Tobacco-Free School Certificate, a testament to their dedication to creating a healthier learning environment.

Dr. Moa N Jamir, the District Nodal Officer for NTCP Dimapur, delivered a compelling keynote address outlining the campaign’s objectives. Running from September 24 to November 22, 2024, the 60-day campaign aims to amplify social media engagement and public awareness about the detrimental effects of tobacco. The strategy is multifaceted: increasing public awareness of tobacco’s harmful effects, enhancing compliance with the Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), and promoting Tobacco Free Villages.
Imkumla Aier, Psychologist at NTCP, presented an insightful activity report, highlighting the ongoing efforts and achievements of the programme. The event underscored the importance of collective action in creating a tobacco-free environment, particularly among young people. It was clear that this campaign is not just about numbers; it’s about changing lives and fostering a healthier community.
