On August 22, 2024, a sudden and heavy downpour in the afternoon led to a devastating incident in Chessore, Shamatore district. An elderly man, identified as Mukhe Yimkhiung, was washed away by the strong currents of the Ningdangke stream. Yimkhiung was a member of the Watsan Committee and a retired pipe fitter from the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED).
The incident occurred without warning, catching everyone off guard. Despite the efforts of local residents and emergency responders, Yimkhiung’s body was recovered several hundred meters away from the spot where he was swept away.
The loss of life due to this natural disaster has deeply affected the community. In response, the Chessore Village Council declared a traditional mourning day on August 23rd, adhering to the customs and practices of the people. The council has also requested appropriate compensation from the concerned authorities.
