Barcelona target former Real Madrid man to address defensive needs

Sergio Reguilon

FC Barcelona are reportedly interested in acquiring Tottenham Hotspur’s left-back, Sergio Reguilon. The Spanish giants are keen on bringing the former Real Madrid player back to La Liga, especially as they seek to fill the void left by Marcos Alonso’s departure.

With the new football season on the horizon, clubs across Europe are strategising to strengthen their rosters. For Barcelona, the left-back position has become a priority following Alonso’s exit. While manager Hansi Flick has internal candidates like Alex Valle and Gerard Martin, the experience and skill set of Reguilon make him an attractive option. The club are exploring the possibility of adding him to their defensive lineup, hoping his La Liga experience can add depth and reliability.

Sergio Reguilon’s journey at Tottenham has been anything but smooth. Despite a significant £32 million transfer fee, he has struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup under manager Ange Postecoglou. Last season, Reguilon was loaned out to Manchester United and Brentford, where he managed to demonstrate his capabilities with some commendable performances. However, with only a year left on his contract, Tottenham appear willing to part ways with the player to recover some of their investment.

Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas reports that Barcelona have initiated inquiries regarding Reguilon’s availability. The club are meticulously assessing the conditions for a potential transfer, particularly in light of the player’s contract nearing its end. A loan move seems improbable, making a permanent transfer the most feasible option.

Barcelona’s consideration of Reguilon is intriguing, especially given their existing internal options. Gerard Martin has shown potential during the club’s pre-season tour in the USA, and Flick has expressed confidence in him as a backup for Alejandro Balde. Nevertheless, the allure of acquiring a seasoned La Liga player like Reguilon remains strong.

The Catalan club face a delicate balancing act as they weigh their interest in Reguilon against other transfer priorities, including potential moves for Nico Williams and Joao Cancelo. Successfully managing these interests will be crucial in determining whether they proceed with a deal for the Spanish left-back.

For Reguilon, a transfer to Barcelona would offer a golden opportunity to return to La Liga and compete at an elite level. It would also allow Tottenham to streamline their squad and focus on new signings, such as the anticipated acquisition of Dominic Solanke.

The potential move of Reguilon to Barcelona adds an intriguing twist to the summer market. The coming days will be pivotal in deciding whether this interest materialises into a concrete transfer, impacting the futures of both the player and the clubs involved.
