Nagaland Women Triumph in Lok Sabha Election Duties

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Nagaland witnessed a significant number of women officials manning polling stations across the state. The Northern Angami – I Assembly Constituency in Kohima particularly stood out, with women officers managing over 500 polling stations, including all-women polling stations.

Peaceful and Smooth Election Process

Report from Eastern Mirror indicate that the election process was conducted peacefully and smoothly, with women officials at the forefront. Voters exhibited cooperative and friendly behaviour, adhering to clean election principles such as the ‘one person one vote’ rule.

The women officials expressed their appreciation for the community’s support and cooperation, describing the experience as educational and enriching.

Kumar Ramnikant, the administrative head of Kohima district, proposed the initiative to have women-only managed polling stations. This decision not only highlighted the importance of women’s participation in the electoral process but also contributed to the ongoing efforts of the Clean Election Movement in Nagaland, which aims to prevent corruption and ensure fair elections.

Women’s Representation in Nagaland Politics

Despite the high percentage of female voters in Nagaland, with 82.48% turnout in the 2018 state assembly election, women’s representation in politics remains low.

Currently, only two women occupy seats in the State Legislative Assembly, a stark reminder of the patriarchal values, customary laws, and practices that continue to act as barriers to women’s political participation in Naga society.

The successful conduct of the Lok Sabha elections in Nagaland, with women officials at the helm, is a positive sign. However, challenges persist. In six districts of Eastern Nagaland, no voters turned out to cast their votes in response to calls from various Naga groups to abstain from voting. This highlights the need for continued efforts to foster inclusive political participation and address the concerns of all communities.

Inspiring Future Elections

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Nagaland have demonstrated the potential for women to play a crucial role in the democratic process. The positive experiences shared by women officials manning polling stations serve as an inspiration for future elections and emphasise the importance of creating an enabling environment for women’s political empowerment.

As Nagaland continues its journey towards a more inclusive and representative democracy, the active participation and leadership of women will be essential in shaping the state’s political landscape.

The peaceful and smooth conduct of the elections, led by women officials, is a step in the right direction towards breaking down barriers and promoting gender equality in the political sphere.
