Awotsakilimi, a picturesque village in the Zunheboto district of Nagaland, recently marked a significant milestone as they celebrated 100 years of Christianity in their community. The two-day event, held on 6 and 7 April, 2024, brought together villagers from far and wide to commemorate this momentous occasion under the theme “Proclaiming God’s mighty work.”
The centenary celebration featured an array of notable speakers who shared their wisdom and encouraged the congregation to live as spiritually mature individuals, acting as living examples of God’s work in their lives.
Nikhui Achumi, Pastor of Diphupar Sümi Baptist Church, Rev Kughato Chophi, Executive Secretary of SBAK Nito Mount, and Dr Tokivi Katty, Associate Professor at Manipur Theological College, all delivered powerful messages that resonated with the attendees.

One of the most memorable moments of the celebration was the unveiling and dedication of a monolith by Rev Kughato K Chophi, commemorating the centennial jubilee. This striking monument now stands tall in the village, a tangible symbol of Awotsakilimi’s spiritual journey and the profound impact Christianity has had on their community over the past century.
Attendees were also treated to the release of a centenary commemorative magazine by Khezheto Achumi, Pastor of Sümi Baptist Church Diphupar B. This special publication captures the essence of the village’s story, ensuring that future generations can learn about and appreciate the significance of this milestone.
Under the sub-theme “Convergence of Faith and Heritage,” the celebration showcased century-old ornaments, artefacts, and old photographs from Awotsakilimi village, highlighting the rich history and cultural heritage of the Sümi people. This fascinating exhibition emphasised the importance of maintaining a delicate balance between cultural identity and religious beliefs for tribal believers.

The centenary celebration not only highlighted the deep-rooted faith of the Awotsakilimi villagers but also shed light on the crucial role Christianity has played in shaping the identity of the Sümi community over the past 100 years.
The presence of Rev Dr Daniel Chishi, Executive Secretary of SBAK Aizuto, on Sunday morning added an extra layer of significance to the already momentous event.
Inashe Achumi, Akükatou, extended a warm welcome address to the gathered community, setting the tone for the joyous occasion. Tokugha P Achumi, Additional Director of Industries and Commerce, Shikaho P Yeptho, General Manager of Nagaland State Transport, and Dr Vikato Kinimi, Retired Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare, all conveyed messages of exuberance, further emphasising the importance of this milestone for the village.

Kughaho Achumi, Convenor of the Centennial Jubilee Planning Board, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to making the jubilee a resounding success.
