N Chingwang Konyak, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) President in Nagaland, publicly apologised on April 8, 2024, for his controversial remarks made during an election rally in Wokha on April 5.
His comments regarding the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) demand for a separate Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) were deemed a violation of a resolution passed by the Konyak Union on March 30, 2024.

In his heartfelt apology, Konyak acknowledged the severity of his error in commenting on the ENPO-FNT issue, which was not related to his election campaign. He assured the public that such actions would not be repeated in the future and pledged to refrain from engaging in or commenting on the matter in any upcoming election activities, both as an individual and in his capacity as the NDPP President.
The Konyak Civil Society Organisations had summoned Konyak to appear at their office in Mon within 48 hours to provide an explanation for his actions. Responding to the summons, he signed an undertaking in the presence of Konyak Union and community leaders, affirming his commitment to upholding the Konyak Union resolution and maintaining the integrity of the community.

Despite the controversy surrounding his remarks, Konyak expressed his unwavering dedication to working towards the progress and upliftment of the Eastern Nagaland people and the Konyak community. His apology aimed to address the concerns raised by the Konyak Union and demonstrate his respect for their decision on the matter.
The ENPO has been actively advocating for the creation of a separate Frontier Nagaland Territory, which has become a sensitive issue in the region. Konyak’s comments during the election rally were perceived as a violation of the Konyak Union’s stance on the matter, leading to the demand for a public apology.
