On September 26, the Directorate of Science & Technology in Kohima hosted the inaugural Round Table Talk on Artificial Intelligence (AI), a milestone event that delved into the vast potential and implications of AI across various sectors.
Principal Secretary, Science & Technology, I. Himato Zhimomi, set the stage with his insightful opening remarks. He underscored the dual facets of AI: its user and maker aspects. Zhimomi emphasized the need to understand how AI can be effectively harnessed in both private and government sectors, while also highlighting the importance of safeguarding its use. He envisioned AI as a powerful tool for enhanced governance and urged the public to provide guidance on its applications over the next decade.

Zhimomi painted a vivid picture of AI’s societal impact, predicting it will revolutionize every aspect of life, affecting individuals in both government and private sectors. He called upon young minds to collaborate and bring everyone on board who is passionate about this platform.
NCS Ex-Officio Director & Joint Secretary, Science & Technology, Zeneikhono Vimero, welcomed attendees and credited Principal Secretary Zhimomi for conceptualizing the event under the Nagaland Science Mission -2024 (NSM). Vimero explained that NSM aims for future economic growth and a prosperous society through various scientific and technological interventions, including the establishment of AI centers. She noted that this initiative aligns with India’s AI mission, which is set to make significant strides in the next five years, including infrastructure development for start-ups, academia, and researchers, with cabinet approval for over 100 crore rupees.

The technical session was a treasure trove of knowledge, featuring esteemed speakers. Prof. Samarendra Dandapat from the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, discussed “Emerging AI Tools in India” and “Applications of AI in Indian Context & Future Prospects.” Dr. Anuja Pandey, Programme Director-PGCMIT and Head of India Case Research Centre-ICRC at the All India Management Association (AIMA) in New Delhi, shared her valuable insights. Ajit Kumar Ranjan, IAS Deputy Secretary of the Sixteenth Finance Commission, Ministry of Finance, presented a compelling case study on “Experiences Sharing on Wokha Saathi: AI-Powered Chatbot.”
The second session saw a lively round table discussion moderated by Kekuneil Ltu/ Onongoto Soleho, where participants delved deeper into AI’s implications and potential. This interactive session fostered a sense of community and collaboration among attendees.
