NH-29 reopens after extensive repairs, easing commute for residents and travelers

Starting at 6:00 AM on September 24, 2024, National Highway 29 (NH-29) will once again be open to all traffic, marking a significant relief for commuters and residents in the region. The stretch between Chathe Bridge (Parkai Jn.) and New Chümoukedima Village, which has been under repair, is now ready for use.

Deputy Commissioner of Chümoukedima, Polan John, NCS, has announced that traffic will be regulated by the Traffic Police to ensure smooth and safe passage. Vehicles will be allowed to move in one direction at a time to prevent congestion and maintain order.

However, the road from Chumoukedima Town (Old Check Gate) to New Chümoukedima via Old Chümoukedima Village will remain closed from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. This temporary closure is part of ongoing efforts to manage traffic and facilitate the completion of necessary works.

On September 23, 2024, a review meeting was held by the DC with various stakeholders, including the ADC Medziphema, EAC Seithekema, representatives from the Police, PWD NH, Chümoukedima and New Chümoukedima villages, Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO), Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO), GM-Dimapur PMU, NHIDCL, and contractors. The meeting focused on addressing critical issues such as the removal of overhanging rocks and the restoration of the two-lane works.

Concerns raised by the CPO and CYO regarding the slow progress and quality of workmanship near Chathe Bridge were also discussed in detail. These concerns were met with a commitment to ensure that the work meets the required standards.

The reopening of NH-29 is a welcome development for the community, as it will significantly ease the commute for residents and travelers. The coordinated efforts of local authorities and organizations aim to provide a safe and efficient travel experience along this critical route. As work continues, the public is advised to follow traffic regulations and any updates provided by the authorities to ensure smooth and safe travel.
