Nagaland Bar Association alleges illicit police-advocate nexus

The Kohima Bar Association (KBA) has raised concerns about an illicit nexus between advocates and police in Nagaland, which they claim is compromising the criminal justice system. This unethical collaboration allegedly involves police compelling arrested individuals to hire specific advocates, who then share fees with the police. The KBA asserts that this practice violates Article 22 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to legal representation of one’s choice. The association has taken up this issue with the Director General of Police (DGP) in Nagaland, urging action against erring officials. They have also warned their member advocates to cease such practices and encouraged reporting of any misconduct. The KBA emphasizes the importance of upholding ethical standards to ensure fair justice delivery.
