Akumienla Limanungsang Imchen has become the first karate player from Nagaland to win a medal at an international competition. The 8th South Asian Karate Championship 2024, held in Thimphu, Bhutan, saw Akumienla secure a bronze medal in the Senior Female Kumite category.
Representing India, Akumienla was selected by the National Federation of Karate to participate in the championship, which took place from July 13 to 20 at the Royal Institute of Management. As a senior member of the All Nagaland Karate Do Association, she trains under the guidance of Sensei Temsu Sangtam at the Logdrum Higher Secondary School Dojo in Sangtamtilla, Dimapur.

The South Asian Karate Championship, organized by the South Asian Karate Federation and hosted by the Bhutan Karate Association with support from the Bhutan Olympic Committee, brought together the region’s top karate talents. Akumienla’s success on this international stage is a significant milestone for Nagaland’s sports community.
Kyoshi Mutum Bankim Singh, Chief of the International Shito Ryu Karate Federation, India, and Renshi Soibam Bindeshori Chanu, Technical Secretary of ISKF-India, accompanied Akumienla as the female official. Their presence and support played a crucial role in her successful debut at the championship.

The All Nagaland Karate Do Association extended their congratulations to Akumienla for her historic win. They also expressed gratitude to Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma and the commandant of the 15th IR for their support, which enabled her to participate and bring honor to the state.
Akumienla, who hails from Landmark Colony, Dimapur, and is the daughter of Limanungsang Imchen and Achala Tzuder, not only excels in karate but also serves as a Rifle Woman in the IRB 15th NAP Mahila Battalion. Her dedication to both her sport and her professional duties makes her a role model for aspiring athletes and professionals alike.
This historic achievement by Akumienla Limanungsang Imchen showcases Nagaland’s potential to produce world-class athletes and puts the state on the international sports map.
